“Are we going ice skating?” I ask, because that seems like the most obvious thing we could be doing, here, at a former ice skating rink. Or current ice skating rink? It’s definitely been spruced up recently.

“Do you want to go ice skating with me?” He takes my hand and helps me out of the car.

“I don’t think you would want to go ice skating with me. My coordination isn’t that great and sharp blades are involved…you might end the night with one fewer toe or something.”

He grins down at me and squeezes my fingers. “Good thing we’re not ice skating then. C’mon.”

We walk to the building’s front door and Hunter pulls a set of keys out of his pocket. They slide into the lock and turn easily. We step into a brightly colored lobby of sorts that smells like new construction and rubber. There are two cash registers perched on the front desk and two pairs of black socks on the counter between them.

Hunter grabs the larger pair and hands me the smaller one. “What is this?”

With a sly smile he says, “You’ll see.”

I do as he asks. “This is the weirdest date I’ve ever been on.”

His movement catches at the date reference, but I have to be real with myself here. I want him, I want to kiss him, I’d like to get naked with him at some point. It’s a date.

Once our special socks are on, he leads me toward a dark room just outside the lobby. I can tell from the airflow and the whir of the air conditioner that it’s huge.

I trust Hunter with my life, but the nerves creep in. “If something jumps out at me,” I say, wrapping my arms around his, “I will make you regret this, even if I have to hop onto your back like a howler monkey.”

“Nothing’s gonna jump out at you. Although, speaking of jumping…” he reaches to his left and flips a switch. The gentle hum of tube lights coming online fills the air and the brightness is practically blinding for a second. It takes a few seconds for my brain to catch up with what my eyes are seeing.

“Oh my god!” I say, excited. This is high school Lexie’s version of heaven. And current Lexie’s version of heaven if my adrenaline rush is to be believed.

It’s a trampoline park.

“I love trampolines!”

“I know,” he says.

“That’s a random thing to know about a person,” I reply, looking around at the place in wonder. It’s wall-to-wall trampolines, with bright orange and blue bumpers around the edges. The place is pristine, and we’re the only ones here.

“We had gym during the same period in tenth grade, remember?”

I nod. He always picked me to be on his dodgeball team. “Yeah.”

“There was that old trampoline in the back of the gym that we’d get to jump on when we got free time before the end of the class. Then Jenny Burke—”

“Broke her arm,” I chime in.

“Yeah. The school district said it was unsafe and it was removed the next day.
